What are Antony J Stanton’s vampire books about?

This dark and brutal world of immortals exists alongside humanity, hidden in the shadows and constantly meddling in human affairs through violence, manipulation, and ancient rivalries. Antony J Stanton’s vampire books explore the terrifying relationship between mortals and monsters in a sprawling Gothic underworld filled with betrayal, bloodshed, and supernatural conflict. Combining the atmosphere of classic vampire horror novels with the scale and world-building of an epic dark fantasy vampire series, these stories deliver a unique medieval vision of vampire mythology unlike anything seen before.

What order should I read the books in?

Readers should either start with “Blood of the Damned”, BookFest award-winning book one of the Blood of the Dragon series, or perhaps with “Speak of the Devil”, the linked but standalone novella. “Blood of the Damned” and “The Name of Vampire“, book two in the series, are a duology, a standalone story in themselves, so they’re ideal for readers who don’t like a series. But for those who do like a series, this will eventually run to nine or ten books.

Are these books horror or dark fantasy?

The line between horror and dark fantasy is often blurred, and this series embraces both genres. The brooding castles, ancient rivalries, and richly detailed medieval settings create a powerful Gothic horror atmosphere filled with dread and mystery. At the same time, the expansive dark fantasy world-building explores hidden vampire societies, political intrigue, and ancient supernatural powers existing alongside humanity. Combined with intense supernatural violence, creeping suspense, and brutal bloodshed, the series delivers a dark and immersive blend of Gothic horror and epic fantasy.

Are Antony J Stanton’s vampires based on traditional vampire mythology?

Yes. The series draws heavily from classic vampire mythology, ancient myths, and the Gothic traditions that have defined vampire fiction for generations. Inspired by real historical figures, folklore inspiration, and the terrifying vampire legends of Eastern Europe, the books explore a brutal hidden world existing alongside humanity. Vlad Dracula himself appears prominently in the series, particularly in Book #3, with the character based on the real ruler of Wallachia from the 1400s. While the novels honour traditional vampires, classic folklore, and the influence of Dracula , the story also introduces many unique twists that take vampire mythology in bold and unexpected new directions. Ancient superstitions, dark rituals, and original interpretations of vampire lore create a fresh and deeply atmospheric Gothic horror experience for modern readers.

What makes Blood of the Damned different from other vampire books?

“Blood of the Damned” and the wider Blood of the Dragon series combine the chilling atmosphere and horror focus of traditional vampire fiction with the scale and ambition of the best vampire books in modern dark fantasy. Set within a brutal medieval setting filled with war, betrayal, and ancient evil, the series delivers a realistic atmosphere where humanity exists alongside their own vampire underworld — governed by its own laws, rivalries, and blood-soaked ambitions. Far more than a simple vampire story, these unique vampire novels blend political intrigue, brutality, slow-burning suspense, and expansive underworld-building into an epic dark fantasy experience. For readers searching for dark medieval vampire books with rich mythology, terrifying horror, and layered storytelling, the Blood of the Dragon series offers a fresh and uncompromising new vision of vampire fiction. This is not just one tale, but an ongoing saga of horror, vengeance, corruption, and survival — and that journey begins with book #1, “Blood of the Damned.”

Are the books suitable for fans of Dracula and Gothic horror?

Absolutely. The Blood of the Dragon series embraces the dark spirit of Dracula and classic Gothic horror traditions, combining brutal alternative history with rich atmospheric storytelling and a terrifying medieval world steeped in bloodshed, fear, and ancient evil. Featuring the real Vlad Dracula alongside a deeply original vampire mythology, the series delivers a fresh and uncompromising twist on traditional vampire fiction that will leave horror and dark fantasy readers breathless.

Are these vampire books part of a series?

Books one and two form a complete standalone duology with a fully satisfying narrative arc, making them perfect for readers who prefer a self-contained story rather than an endless series. By the end of book #2, the central journey reaches a powerful and emotional conclusion that feels both earned and complete. However, beneath the surface, subtle overarching story elements and seeds of a far larger conflict begin to emerge. With the very final moments of the second book, readers are offered a glimpse into the continuing mythology and the deeper horrors waiting beyond the shadows. From book #3 onwards, the series expands into a vast connected universe of ancient vampire lore, political intrigue, bloodshed, and interwoven destinies — what the author calls the “bloodiverse.” Much like the first time readers discovered Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, encountered Gandalf in The Hobbit, or stepped into the world of A Game of Thrones, this is the beginning of a much larger adventure. The world of the Blood of the Dragon series is only just beginning to unfold.

Who would enjoy these books?

The Blood of the Dragon series is not designed for readers looking for fast, disposable vampire fiction filled only with endless gore or shallow shock value. While the series contains brutality, violence, and horror, it is ultimately a slow-burning and atmospheric journey driven by character development, medieval worldbuilding, political intrigue, and lingering supernatural dread. Readers searching for books like Empire of the Vampire or Interview with the Vampire will likely feel far more at home here than those looking for lightweight action or romance-focused vampire stories. The series is written for fans of: dark fantasy Gothic horror medieval fiction supernatural thrillers complex mythology morally grey characters immersive long-form storytelling Like the very best dark fantasy and horror literature, these books are intended to stay with the reader long after the final page. The themes linger, the mythology deepens, and the consequences of the characters’ choices continue to echo throughout the connected universe of the series. For readers making “books like…” searches or looking for intelligent vampire fiction with atmosphere, brutality, emotional weight, and meaningful storytelling, the Blood of the Dragon series offers a darker and more literary alternative to modern mainstream vampire novels. This is Gothic horror and dark fantasy at its grittiest — a brutal medieval supernatural thriller series written for readers who want depth, tension, mythology, and unforgettable worlds.

Is Blood of the Damned historically inspired?

Absolutely. “Blood of the Damned” is deeply rooted in the brutal and fascinating world of medieval Europe during the final Crusades — an era filled with war, plague, religious conflict, political instability, and constant bloodshed. The series draws heavily upon real medieval history, ancient superstition, and the dark folklore that shaped how people viewed the world during the time. Fear of witches, demons, werewolves, and vampires was woven into everyday life, creating the perfect historical atmosphere for a Gothic supernatural horror story. With the fall of Constantinople approaching, the Renaissance beginning to stir, and Vlad Dracula ruling Wallachia alongside the feared Order of the Dragon, the setting provides a rich and terrifying backdrop for the beginning of the series. The result is a dark medieval vampire story that blends historical atmosphere, folklore, political intrigue, and supernatural terror into a brutal and immersive reading experience.
