Real Life Horror

Many of us like a good horror movie, and if we happen to know that they’re based on real events, somehow it makes them all the more fascinating. Or horrifying. There are some horror films that really do seem too incredible to be true. And so what I’m about to tell you may come as a bit of a shock, so read on, my friend – if you dare…

Horror moves cover many, many subjects, some based on reality, some clearly (thankfully) not. Murderers, serial killers, man-eating crocodiles – we know these are all real, unfortunately. But what about spiritual hauntings? Possessed and evil dolls? Many films have their origins in true stories. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” for example, “Psycho,” and “Silence of the Lambs”. But would you believe, apparently, even “The Blob”?

For real!

Here are a few details of some horror films over the years which have their basis in events that actually did happen.

“Open Water” (2003) – a film about a couple who were left behind in the sea after a scuba diving trip at the Great Barrier Reef.
“Wolf Creek” (2005) – based on the abduction and torture of Joanne Lees and Peter Falconio after their car broke down in the Australian outback and a stranger, Bradley John Murdoch, stopped to ‘help’. Lees fortunately escaped.
“Annabelle” (2014) – a film about a possessed doll was based on a similar story from a nursing student – Dona X – in 1968, who received a strange doll as a gift. Her and her house mate reported that it seemed to have moved around their apartment with neither of them claiming responsibility.
“Regression” (2015) – tells the story of a series of strange events IN rural USA from the 1980’s that were connected to a satanic cult.
“The Exorcism of Emily Rose” (2005) – based on the experience of Anneliese Michel who died after 67 exorcisms were performed on her.
“Deliver Us From Evil” (2014) – the film starring Eric Bana was an adaptation of the book by Ralph Sarchie, US soldier-turned-paranormal detective, who teamed up with a priest to investigate a series of cases of demonic possession.
And then there’s the “Conjuring” films, “The Sacrament”, “The Amityville Horror”, “Poltergeist,” and even “The Blob.” Yep, you read it right.
The 1958 film, “The Blob” was apparently inspired by a news article in the Philadelphia press on 26th September 1950 about the findings of some police officers. Go figure.
And there are many more in this article…

I have to say, though, having read the article, I’ll sleep a little less easily, thinking that some of the events of these potentially truly terrifying films are actually based on reality.
Enjoy.
