So, what REALLY happened to Ripley in the classic horror movie, Alien? Read on to find out, my friend…
Think you know your horror movies? Well, think again. Like many films, horror movies go through their fair share of rewrites until they finally hit the big screen in their definitive version. And some of those rewrites would have taken the ending in a very different direction. For example…
- World War Z (2013) – the original screenplay had Brad Pitt realise that cold will kill the zombies. He then goes to find his wife, who has moved to Florida and sold her body to another man, in order to survive. Dark, or what?
- Get Out (2017), Oscar nominated for Best Picture, has Chris escape the house where he was imprisoned. He then strangles his girlfriend just as his buddy arrives in a police car. It was originally written that it was a real cop who arrives, who then arrests Chris, and Chris is thrown in jail, unable to convince anyone of what really happened. Maybe it would have won the Oscar with that dark ending.
- Hostel (2005) – a group of friends are kidnapped, held in a room, and some men take turns torturing them. One of them named Paxton escapes eventually, hunts down the kidnapper and kills him. The first version had Paxton find the kidnapper, abduct his daughter, and torture her instead. Yikes!
- Evil Dead (2013) – Mia, the protagonist must kill her evil doppelganger to survive. The original ending had her rescued by a man, only to end up kidnapped by him and stowed in the boot of his car, still possessed.
- The Butterfly Effect (2004) – Aston Kutcher must rewrite his own life, over and over. Four endings were shot. One of them had him reborn back into the womb, where he strangles himself. Gruesome!
- Alien – Perhaps the biggest shock for me was the original ending of Alien. Ripley was never originally meant to survive. Instead, she was supposed to be torn apart by the Alien, thus preventing us from enjoying the undeniable excellence of Aliens, and the arguable mediocrity of all that followed. Oh well…
There are many more in the article in the link at the end, including Leatherface (2017), Godsend (2004), The Blair Witch Project (1999), and the Paranormal Activity saga. Enjoy.
